Downing Wants Liverpool over Arsenal

Stewart Downing has turned down interest from Arsenal in favour of a move to Liverpool, according to Sky Sports . Rumours over the weekend surfaced that the Gunners had made an £18M bid for the former Middlesbrough winger, but these were denied by his club, and Downing remains adamant that he wants to move to Anfield. So far Aston Villa have, publicly at least, stuck steadfastly to their line that the England international is not for sale, particularly as they have already lost Ashley Young to Manchester United. This, however, is almost certainly a mere negotiating position, trying to force Downing’s hand to submit a transfer request whilst at the same time placating their own fans. It has also been suggested that, despite Damien Comolli leaving on the club’s pre-season tour of the Far East, a deal could be concluded early this week as the Reds look to get their team for next season in place as early as possible. With Downing having set his heart on a move to Merseyside, a swift conclusion to the deal would suit all parties. Whilst Downing is clearly not a name that excites many Liverpool fans, his consistent ability to carve out opportunities for his team mates – Downing was 4th in the Chance Creation table last season – has attracted the attention of both Comolli and Kenny Dalglish. If Suárez and Carroll can form the sort of clinical partnership that every Liverpool fan hopes they can, then having players on board such as Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Downing, each of whom featured prominently in chance creation stats last season, will hopefully provide the Reds with the ammunition needed to fire themselves back up the table.

Why are you all screaming for Downing? He’s not that good, he’s too old and at anything more than £10m is way too expensive. Villa are apparently now wanting £25m that would equate to about £10m per year including wages for the 3 years he would be viable, with very little chance of recouping anything for him.
John Henry has already stated he will not pay over the top for old players, look at Koncheski and Poulson we’ve lost a fortune on those 2.

honestly, if you don’t know the sport that well then you might think that bastos and Maya are better options….in a sense they actually are, but they don’t create width in a team. neither is known for their crossing. why spend 35 mil on Carroll if we’re not going to provide him service? BTW, Bastos may still be an option, but o think they may use him as leftback more
