Liverpool have identified new England star Jack Butland as the man they want to become their long-term number one.Birmingham City stopper Butland has shot to stardom in recent months after being selected as part of Roy Hodgson’s squad for Euro 2012 before representing Team GB at the Olympic Games. Jack Butland made his England debut against Italy this week (Getty) He also made his Three Lions debut against Italy last week in England’s 2-1 friendly win in Switzerland. That has prompted Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers to put him to the top of his list of potential replacements for Pepe Reina. However, according to the Sunday Mirror, Liverpool face strong competition for his signature from Manchester City, Tottenham and Southampton. One factor that could make Liverpool’s bid more appealing to Birmingham is the fact they are willing to loan him back to the Midlands club after signing him.Butland also knows that he would find it hard to ever displace Joe Hart as City’s goalkeeper, such is Hart’s reputation with the Premier League champions.Although he would have to compete with Reina for the gloves on Merseyside, that is seen as a more realistic target for the 19-year-old.While he might not take over immediately, Rodgers is thought to be keen to install him as number one in the years to come.
