Steven Gerrard has revealed he turned down the chance to join Manchester United and Real Madrid, claiming he has never been prepared to leave Liverpool. The Reds captain has long been a favourite of Mourinho, ever since the Portuguese manager tried to lure the 32-year-old to Chelsea in 2005. And Gerrard has also admitted United were keen to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford but there was no way he could play for one of Liverpool’s biggest rivals.‘It was flattering back then because the two best managers around wanted me to play in their teams,’ said Gerrard.‘Gary Neville said he (Ferguson) wanted me but you understand that playing for Manchester United would have been impossible. I never would have wanted to play for Manchester United. ‘They are a fantastic club but that rivalry is there, and it’s why Gary could not have played for us either.‘Don’t get me wrong, it was flattering that, after everything he has done in the game, Sir Alex Ferguson wanted me to play in his team, but that was an impossible situation.‘The Mourinho thing was different, of course – this club weren’t really challenging at the time, so there was something to think about but I ended up saying no and a year later I said no again.’ Steven Gerrard will end his playing career at Liverpool (Picture: Getty Images) Mourinho was such a big fan of Gerrard that he tried to sign him again when he moved to Real Madrid and took charge of the Spanish club in 2010. But Gerrard, who signed a contract extension in January 2012, which is expected to see him play out his career at Anfield, was not keen on joining Madrid. The Liverpool legend doesn’t understand why players try so hard to secure deals to the likes of Madrid and Barcelona.’He (Mourinho) came back when he arrived at Real Madrid two years ago,’ Gerrard revealed. ‘I look at some players who get interest from clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona and they cause absolute wars to get out and get there. ‘But that has never been me and, again, it just wasn’t going to happen – I was happy here – I was settled, I thought all that had gone really.’
