LFC v Man Utd – Pre-Match Polls

Howard Webb

Liverpool take on Utd at Old Trafford in what many fans, pundits and players alike refer to as the biggest fixture of the season. Throw in Howard Webb and you have some decent ingredients for a potentially cracking game of football.

Only Liverpool v Everton has produced more Premier League red cards than this one, which is also being billed as Suarez v Van Persie with only one goal separating them in the PL scoring charts.

Liverpool make the short trip to Manchester with new signing Daniel Sturridge amongst the ranks, Luis Suarez in search of his 16th goal and Steven Gerrard looking to equal his assists record, presently sat on 8. We have thrown together a few polls for match day, a couple in honour of Mr Webb also included for comedy effect, hopefully they don’t become a reality.

              Downing v Maxi: The Stats

As Stewart Downing arrives at Anfield in a £20m deal,  the fourth major summer for the Reds in the present transfer window behind Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Alexander Doni, he has certainly made it clear he is keen to get on with things.

The former Villa man has featured on both the right and left flanks in his time at Villa, following his £10m move to them from Middlesborough in 2009 after he saw his boyhood team relegated to the Championship.

His likely deployment in the current Liverpool side could again be a varied one, given the midfielders presently at Kenny Dalglish’s disposal but it is the left flank that many Reds believe he is most likely to appear. Both flanks have given Liverpool trouble in recent seasons, with a lack of true width glaringly obvious in the squad depth.  A matter many a fan had hoped would be up there high on the priority list to rectify the moment the transfer window opened.

Downing’s arrival is certainly a step in the right direction to bringing some further balance to the side, an experienced Premier League player and one that put 324 crosses into his Aston Villa team mates last season, a statistic that Liverpool could certainly benefit from and one that shadowed his former fellow wideman Ashley Young.

While Downing is keen to get into the side as quick as possible and prove his worth to Dalglish, Maxi Rodriguez will be hoping to offer up more than enough food for thought of his own after a strong finish to the last campaign, not to mention the small matter of two hat-tricks as the season came to a close.

While Maxi made only 24 starts compared to that of the 38 by Downing in the Premier League, his own stats by ratio do make for some encouraging reading both attacking and defensively.

Come the end of the 2011/12 campaign who will have faired better though?

Take a look at our comparison below:

Which player will have the better metrics at the end of the 2011/12 season?

                The Left Back Conundrum

While the believed transfers into Liverpool FC of Alexander Doni and Stewart Downing continue to dominate Anfield related press, it has gone a little more quiet on the subject of a new left back arriving at the club.

With the club believed to be looking to bolster the squad in that area, will it be the likes of Cissokho, Baines, Enrique, Izaguirre etc arriving at the club or will Kenny Dalglish look to rely on the likes of Aurelio, Agger, Flanagan and Johnson to fill the role in the 2011/12 season?

Paul Konchesky looks set for pastures new, with the failed Roy Hodgson signing plying his trade on loan at Nottingham Forest last season and Leicester believed to be presently showing an interest in securing his services. Emiliano Insua has also returned to the club from his loan spell at Galatasary and will be hoping to stake his own claim for the spot under Dalglish.

Where do you think the future lies for the left back spot at Liverpool?

Who will solve the left back conundrum this season at Liverpool?

Who will be next on Twitter for LFC?

The Liverpool FC fan base has been felt surging through the social media world that is Twitter for some time now, with the official @lfctv account having just over 192,000 followers and the renowned @empireofthekop fan resource not far behind with just over 125,000 followers to name but one example.

The month of January, with the transfer window in full swing, saw Barclays conduct an analysis about how much the sport is discussed on social media and the results from the land of Twitter were comprehensive to say the least. Liverpool may find themselves in 6th place in the Barclays EPL at the present moment in time, after a rocky time under the reign of Roy Hodgson but when it comes to Twitter the old cliche that you don’t win nothing in January was blown out of the water in spectacular fashion.

Twitter recorded around a million tweets about the Barclays Premier League and its 20 member clubs during that timeframe, with almost a third of those tweets concerning the L4 club. A snapshot of the leaderboard is shown below.

                    Liverpool FC 301,169
                    Arsenal 110,901
                    Chelsea 97,655
                    Man Utd 86,249
                    Spurs 61,574

With Dirk Kuyt @dirk_18_kuyt the latest to join the list of Liverpool players on Twitter engaging with their fanbase, Liverpool fans hold on Twitter only looks sets to rise. With the likes of manager Kenny Dalglish @kennethdalglish, Glen Johnson @glen_johnson, Lucas Leiva @lucasleiva87, Jonjo Shelvey @j_shelvey, Luis Suarez @luis16suarez, Nathan Ecclestone @ne39, Brad Jones @brad_jones1, as well as Chris Morgan @chrismorgan10 from the Melwood Medical Team already on board, the question to many is just who may be next?

Who will be the next Liverpool player on Twitter?

                    • Agger (25%, 68 Votes)

                      Poll: Is The EPL Evolving?

Liverpool’s problems in recent months, even years, have been very well documented but is unrest and off field problems and failings at the leading Premier League sides the cause of a much closer EPL end to end or has competition just stepped up across the board?

Manchester United’s finances continue to come under scrutiny while Wayne Rooney thought he wanted pastures new, across the City at Eastlands Manchester City’s star studded squad looks set for a January sale as Mancini continues to play too much of a defensive card with his attacking talent for many a fans liking.

In London we have seen at Chelsea, Carlo Ancelotti show his dissatisfaction and surprise at Ray Wilkins removed from the club at and Arnessen confirmed his resignation for the end of the season this morning. Add in Arsenal still searching for a stronger spine to the team and Spurs feeling the new effects of how a Champions League campaign can impact your Premier League form and the so called lower sides in England’s top flights have found more than a few things in their favour at times.

Or are the likes of Stoke, Blackburn, Bolton, Birmingham and those also freshly promoted just a lot better than many give them credit for?

                      You decide.

Are the so called top sides of the EPL failing or is the league just more competitive end to end?
