Fanzone: What’s The Mata With This Transfer Window Business?

An article by Katherine Lockett.

Since the 22nd January,  Liverpool with Kenny and Steve Clarke have taken an average of 2 points a game and a goal difference of plus 19.  If the league had started on this date we would have finished comfortable third.  That was done with the Torres wanting/getting out and his replacement Carroll arriving injured.  The most important piece of the LFC jigsaw in recent years was missing Captain Fantastic Stevie G.  Us Liverpool fans were so excited about the next chapter of the Return of the King…

The “In the knows” and paper rumours had mentioned the likes of  Kun Agüero, Eden Hazard and Tony Evans of the Times personal favourite, Juan Mata were all going to grace the fields of Anfield.  Expectation of the type of transfers that were going to walking through the doors at Melwood were high!!

On the 9th June Jordan Henderson became the first summer signing for a fee of £16m , all of a sudden the likes of Talk sport and Liverpool forums went mental questioning Kenny and why would he spend all that cash on a kid who had an average season for Sunderland.  The stats tell another story, young Jordan made more key passes than any other Liverpool midfielder, he can also play right midfield.  He is also only 20 and with the right guidance he could be a great player.

Next through the door was Charlie Adam. He received a decent reception, he was one of the stars of last season, still young and very keen to build on the reputation he had gained at Blackpool.  He offers something that currently Liverpool did not have since Alonso, plus his corners would give Carroll and other players something to really get their heads on to!

Liverpool still needed that left sided creative midfielder, all that mattered to the fans was getting Mata.  But as time went on, it became clear that the main target was Downing.  SD had a great season for Aston Villa and over the previous last 5 seasons has had consistently produced assists, goals, key passes and crosses.  Villa wanted £20m, especially after losing Young to Man Utd for £17m who only had one year left on his contract.  Liverpool, with the help of a transfer request got their man….

The reaction from the media and fans alike were questioning the signing especially given Mata, who was a shining star at this years under 21′s was said to be available for the £18m and is nearly 4 years younger.  I can see 2 reasons why Downing was the number one target over Mata.  First the number one aim of this season is to get back in to the Champion League.  They needed someone who would settle quickly and show fight for the club.  The second would be stats over the past 5 seasons are great only Gerrard, Giggs and Lampard have better records from midfield.

Without Champion League and the club rightly wanting to balance the books, so  not able to offer ‘city level’ high wages it is important that we get players that create a team greater than the sum of its parts, as it will be difficult to attract the so called ‘star players’.

Kenny is known to like the dressing room to be a happy place, he only wants players that want to be there and show that fight for the club on and off the pitch.  The 3 signing above will do that and will complaint the existing high class players such as Carroll, Suarez and Kuyt.  Surely that’s all that matters…?

    Downing v Maxi: The Stats

As Stewart Downing arrives at Anfield in a £20m deal,  the fourth major summer for the Reds in the present transfer window behind Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Alexander Doni, he has certainly made it clear he is keen to get on with things.

The former Villa man has featured on both the right and left flanks in his time at Villa, following his £10m move to them from Middlesborough in 2009 after he saw his boyhood team relegated to the Championship.

His likely deployment in the current Liverpool side could again be a varied one, given the midfielders presently at Kenny Dalglish’s disposal but it is the left flank that many Reds believe he is most likely to appear. Both flanks have given Liverpool trouble in recent seasons, with a lack of true width glaringly obvious in the squad depth.  A matter many a fan had hoped would be up there high on the priority list to rectify the moment the transfer window opened.

Downing’s arrival is certainly a step in the right direction to bringing some further balance to the side, an experienced Premier League player and one that put 324 crosses into his Aston Villa team mates last season, a statistic that Liverpool could certainly benefit from and one that shadowed his former fellow wideman Ashley Young.

While Downing is keen to get into the side as quick as possible and prove his worth to Dalglish, Maxi Rodriguez will be hoping to offer up more than enough food for thought of his own after a strong finish to the last campaign, not to mention the small matter of two hat-tricks as the season came to a close.

While Maxi made only 24 starts compared to that of the 38 by Downing in the Premier League, his own stats by ratio do make for some encouraging reading both attacking and defensively.

Come the end of the 2011/12 campaign who will have faired better though?

Take a look at our comparison below:

      Marveux Denies Failed Melwood Medical

Sylvain Marveux has moved to state that the reason for a last minute switch to join Newcastle instead of Liverpool, was the result of a failure to agree personal terms with Kenny Dalglish’s side as oppposed to his failure to pass a medical at Melwood.

Rumour had circulated previously, that a medical performed by the Liverpool staff highlighted further groin concerns for the Rennes winger who managed to make only 10 appearances last season. The left side midfielder had also seen serious groin problems limit his progress back in 2008/2009 but a greatly improved 2009/10 season had put him back on the radar of a number of Europe’s leading clubs.

The Anfield side have long been linked with Marveux and will no doubt move quickly on to alternate targets to further boost squad depth for the coming 2011/12 season. The player who now joins Newcastle Utd on July 1st told L’Equipe.

“I do not want to go into details, but if I did not sign in Liverpool, it was because there was a contractual disagreement between the parties Thursday night,”.

        Holtby On The Reds Radar?

New England Sports Ventures (NESV) may only have one hand on the ownership of Liverpool Football Club but in many areas, it seems that the media are already happy to start spending that investment on players, before it has even been sanctioned by the High Court.

With the Premier League yesterday confirming that should the High Court decision be in the favour of Martin Broughton, they are happy with the credentials of NESV in line with the criteria laid out in their Owners & Directors Test, rising speculation is that Lewis Holtby could be a Reds target in the very near future.

The Mainz winger, currently on loan from Schalke, has been in sensational form so far this season, providing 6 Bundesliga assists and also finding the net twice, form that has helped his side to the top of the league with seven straight wins and a 3pt advantage over Dortmund.

Holtby is an Everton fan in the footsteps of his father Chris, a English former soldier from Liverpool, who was stationed at the Rheindahlen RAF base in Mönchengladbach when Lewis was born, his mother is German. With Lewis representing Germany at U18, U19, U20 & U21 levels so far but not yet the senior side, a debate has raged in some quarters in recent weeks following his fine form, that England should try and capitalise on his parentage themselves for full international honours.

Liverpool’s Danish scout Jakob Friis-Hansen has already hinted that the club are looking to bring in around four new players in the January transfer window, whether his directives between now and then out in Germany, cover reporting back on the starlet with Merseyside connections remains to be seen. A very talented young player with an £8m price tag, flair and confidence, someone that could certainly provide some different options at Anfield.

          Deadwood, Turan & Milevskiy

The transfer window may now well be firmly slammed shut until the New Year but while all matters RBS go back to dominating the headlines, it seems that squad changes at Anfield are still on the mind of Roy Hodgson, just as much as the media continue to work on possible new arrivals.

Liverpool’s squad to start the 2010 campaign may well be lacking the fire power in atacking areas that many a fan craved but Roy Hodgson has been happy to throw some more optimism out there to be digested, as he declared himself satisified with the clubs summer dealings. With Javier Mascherano finally making his long anticipated move to Barcelona and Alberto Aquilani sent out on loan to Juve, Hodgson reshuffled his pack as he brought in Christian Poulsen and Raul Meireles to provide balance across the midfield.

“It was important to sign a quality midfielder when we lost Javier,” said Hodgson. “We had half prepared for his departure by jumping in to sign Christian Poulsen when he became available, but it was important for us to keep strong in that area.”

Hodgson commented; “We loaned out Alberto Aquilani and so we are pleased to have been able to bring in Meireles. He is experienced in the Champions League, in international football and has had proven success at Porto. He is an all-round midfielder who is capable of playing in all three of the central midfield positions.”

“He has a pedigree which we researched, followed and studied. I followed him at my previous club so it was good when I heard he could be available and that we could do the business quickly.”

“He has played a lot of international football so settling into the English game won’t be a major problem. Our public are sensible people and they realise that having played all of his career in Portugal, it may take a bit of time. We have that time. He will adjust, but whether it’s from the first moment we’ll have to wait and see.”

With Liverpool also adding Paul Konchesky to the squad to resolve a lack of left back options, Hodgson was probably close to where he realistically thought he would be, given Liverpool’s financial plight, when the time for bidding was over. Despite no further success in the final 24hrs of the window, specifically in the search for striking support for Fernando Torres, Hodgson’s thoughts were that of a good start to his redevlopment of the L4 club and happiness in his decisions.

“We should be very happy,” he said. “A lot of hard work has gone in and you have to mention Christian Purslow and Eduardo Macia, who both worked really hard during the transfer window to do the deals I wanted to happen but also to do deals for quite a few players to leave the club.”

“We were unbelievably overstaffed when I came to the club and, if the truth be known, we still are overstaffed. It was just as big a job making sure some of the players who never feature for the first team move on and that we limit our squad to players who are either in the frame to play first-team football or who have a bright future who are still anxious to play academy and reserve team football.”

“We don’t want that middle group who are too old for reserve football but are not serving any purpose for the first team because they never feature.”

While the axe may still loom in the background and several players contemplate whether they form part of the overstaffing problem, the media as usual are certainly not slow in coming forward with possible replacements and reinforcements. Liverpool as a club, along with its fans, continues to wait to see if RBS continue to increase the pressure on H&G and manages to remove them from ownership, by either enforcement or sale, when the October 6th deadline arrives. Should Liverpool be in the hands of new financially strong and stable owners at the time, then the January transfer window could be a very a different one to the methods required in the last one.

Galatasaray’s Turkish superstar Arda Turan is believed to remain very much on the Anfield radar but he is also been a long term target of both Spurs and Atletico Madrid, with Madrid believed to have seen a final day of the transfer window bid for the winger rejected.

          The Turkish International has been credited on a number of occassions as being interested in a move to Liverpool at some point in his career, mentioning last year;

“As I always mention, Liverpool attracts me because of their tradition,”

“In Europe, I am a Liverpool supporter, so if I go to play in Europe, I would like to play for them.”

“My dream has always been to play for one of the top European clubs, but you shouldn’t make concrete plans in your life because sometimes these plans cannot be achieved.”

“This is my dream, but for now I’m just working on my football.”

While Galatasaray’s golden boy is certainly going to take some prizing away from the club, a fee in the region of £14m believed to be an approximate valuation of the players worth, Liverpool do have a good relationship with the Turkish giants which they may hope to call on. With Harry Kewell previously sold to the club, Milan Baros on their books and Emiliano Insua just starting a season long loan, there are some familiarities to work with even though it will be money at the end of the day that does the vast majority of the talking.

While people are left to speculate whether tradition and the Europa League will  be enough for Turan to one day switch to a Red shirt, other than that of his home nation, media have also been very quick to emphasise the just under £10m buy out clause that has been inserted in to the contract of another believed Liverpool target, Artem Milevskiy. The Ukranian striker has recently signed a three-year contract extension to keep him at his present club Dinamo Kiev, where he is captain.

Roy Hodgson is credited with interest in the striker over the summer and is also believed to ongoingly be monitoring the situation with Ola Toivonen at PSV as well as Mario Gomez of Bayern Munich, with the possibility of another attempt in January. Hodgson failed in the final stages of the transfer window to entice Bayern into relinquishing the German international that currently sits at 4th choice in their striking line up. The player has since confirmed his knowledge of the interest shown by Liverpool and his consideration of it but was advised that he would not be leaving the club at that time.

The names will continue to flow week in and week out until 2011 arrives but right now there are more pressing matters to attend to. With the right changes in place, if that can be achieved, then some of these suggestions we read day in and day out may one day soon become a reality. However on the other hand, under new ownership and direction, perhaps the ideas may become somewhat bigger.

Transfer Window: Into The Last 24hrs

As we move into the last 24hrs of the current transfer window, the speculation just continues to keep on coming, especially if you are a Liverpool fan. For every suggestive comment on a player, there follows one to disprove it, or vice versa. Even Wikipedia is a little unsure at the moment who a few players are signed to, such is the hysteria that this time of year presents.

From the likes of the apparently close to conclusion deal involving Paul Konchesky, who was in the crowd at Anfield to see them beat West Brom, through to the seemingly very remote chances of the brilliance of Arda Turan, the names continue to hit the headlines. Many rumours are met with hope and excitement in the Liverpool fan base at the possibility of a Red shirt upon their back but of course there are others such as Carlton Cole that seem to continue to grow with a little substance in various quarters but are met with an overwhelming air of disappointment. A signing that would perhaps of suited Hodgson’s former strategy at Fulham more than it would his charge at Liverpool.

Liverpool’s financial position is well known, as is the matter that Roy Hodgson should perhaps have more in his back pocket than he seems to have, to entice clubs to part with their players in these remaining hours. Fans constantly check in to news feeds and try to communicate with the media and those “in the know” via the likes of Twitter, to see if the slightest of developments have been made. Everyone hoping that someone, somewhere, knows something new and Roy Hodgson’s comments post West Brom on his search for a striker, are about to fruition and at one of the required level that Liverpool fans expect.

The name of Ola Toivonen continues to raise a few questions in some areas. Liverpool have been long credited with an interest in the Swedish PSV striker, to the point where a recommendation from Kenny Dalglish is believed to have led to a £9m rejected bid for Roy Hodgson. However Hodgson commented yesterday post West Brom on the likelihood of the players arrival at Anfield with a “no, unlikely” and went on to say that although he recognised Toivonen as a good player he didn’t fit the profile that the club was looking for. Whether PSV are asking too much? the striker has another preferred destination? or Liverpool now have a better option elsewhere remains to be seen. That a £9m bid has already been tabled for the player, does provide a little suggestion that an element of interest may remain as much as it provides enough room for the media to continue to present speculation that the door isn’t in fact completely closed.

The future of many players hangs in the balance across Europe this evening, including that of Liverpool’s own Daniel Ayala and Emiliano Insua but whether it is none, one, two or more that are fortunate enough to find themselves with a Liverpool contract is a story yet to be finished. As Paul Dalglish recently commented in interview with Empire of the Kop, many fans retain the belief such as he does, that even despite troublesome times under the ownership of Hicks & Gillett, it should still very much be a privelege to play for the club, not a task that any player can fulfil, that privelege is in turn wanted to be felt back by their performance.

Should the next chapter in the career of Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez see’s him alongside Fernando Torres this season is but one of the matters up for debate, whether you view it as nothing more than blind optimism or something more than a possibility, the remaining hours will no doubt keep you checking in regardless.

Liverpool Confirm Meireles Capture… Is Toivonen Next?

Liverpool have confirmed this evening that they have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles, on a four-year contract, signing the player for 14 million euros from Porto.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who made 137 appearances scoring & scored 15 goals in his 6 year term at the Portugese club has also been capped 38 times by Portugal, where he featured in each game of their recent World Cup camapign in South Africa. Liverpool have struck quickly in the transfer market to bolster their midfield as Javier Mascherano looks to complete his move to Barcelona over the next 48hrs.

If Meireles can bring his forward thinking high energy game to Anfield then Hodgson may again be able to play Steven Gerrard in a more foward role closer to Fernando Torres. Liverpool have certainly boasted some an impressive midfielder in Mascherano but both his natural game and that of Lucas Leiva is of a far more lateral nature, the same can be said of new arrival Christian Poulsen. This is something which the Reds have found to their demise since the departure of Alonso to Madrid, with Gerrard deployed to his liking further up the field, he was no longer central enough to control games and provide the energy or creative impotus to develop enough attacking play. Hodgson is certainly adding some direction to the Liverpool team, even with a numnber of faces departing during the process, it remains to be seen if further compliments to the squad can be found in time.

Speculation has again risen this evening that Ola Toivonen of PSV could be the next Anfield arrival behind Paul Konchesky of Fulham, after his club withdrew him from their squad to face Den Haag on Sunday, claiming illness. The in form striker from the Eredivisie  has been watched on a couple of occassions now by Hodgson, Dalglish and their teams, scored in PSV’s 5-0 win over FC Sibir Novosibirsk on Thursday night. The player is valued at around the £9m mark., although PSV are looking for closer to £12m.

The indication is that Roy Hodgson will indeed have the full value of the Mascherano sale to invest back into the transfer market, plus maybe a little more still. The maths just dont add up in regards to what he should have at his disposal, which is closer to the £40m mark but even with these funds it remains to be seen if Liverpool have left it too late to get everything that they want out of the current transfer window.

                  Raul Meireles Heads To Liverpool

The breaking news this evening, courtesy of The Guardian, is that Liverpool have moved quickly in the search of life after Javier Mascherano to raid Porto for Portugese international Raul Meireles in a £10.7 move.

Meireles starred for Portugal in the recent South Africa World Cup and is understood to have already agreed personal terms with the Reds, in a deal that is already at a very advanced stage with just a medical and signature left pending for the weekend.

Liverpool have been linked with a series of central midfield players since the end of the season including the likes of Scott Parker of West Ham and Steven Defour of Standard Liege to name but two examples. It seems though that the Reds may have a very clear plan in place for the final stages of the transfer window, now that the funds from the sale of Javier Mascherano will be imminently available to them.

With news earlier this afternoon that Paul Konchesky is also expected to be an imminent visitor to the Melwood medical room of Dr Brukner, as he tries to complete his switch from Fulham. All eyes will now be watching with interest as to whether Roy Hodgson & Christian Purslow have an ace up their sleeve in the form of a strikers arrival or more, to add further support to the Liverpool front line headed by Fernando Torres.

                    Konchesky Set For Anfield Medical

Liverpool are believed to be close to finalising a deal in the region of £4million fee which will see Fulham’s left back Paul Konchesky arrive at Anfield.

Manager Roy Hodgson has been a long term admirer of his former player and speculation has been rife in recent weeks that the one time England International would be the next player to arrive in the present transfer window. Hodgson had given an assurance to Fulham fans on his exit that he would not be making an immediate return to raid his former squad but it seems an agreement has been reached between the two sides.

Fulham, who have just completed a £2.25m deal to bring in another Liverpool target, PSV Eindhoven defender Carlos Salcido, are also believed to have enquired about the availability of Liverpoool youngsters Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic as part of the deal.

Konchesky is expected to complete a medical at Melwood over the weekend as Liverpool look to try and bring in a few players over the next 4 days to bolster a depleted squad that has seen Yossi Benayoun, Alberto Aquilani, Diego Cavalieri, Albert Riera & Krisztián Németh move on to pastures new. Javier Mascherano is expected to be added to that list in the next 48hrs as he looks to complete his Barcelona switch.
