Mail: Will new Liverpool striker Fabio Borini be new Fernando Torres or flop like Ryan Babel?

Fabio Borini is the latest big-money striker to arrive at Liverpool. While the likes of Fernando Torres were a hit, Ryan Babel and Andy Carroll struggled to justify the huge price tags.

Aquilani & Babel Going Nowhere

Despite only just completing his first season in the red shirt of Liverpool, Alberto Aquilani has never been short of speculation surrounding him about a move back to Italy.

Napoli are the latest side to be linked with a loan move for the player, who has taken time to overcome the ankle injury he arrived with as well as suffering from a number of viruses once his fitness had returned. With former manager Rafa Benitez not playing the Italian with any consistency until the latter part of last season, he has never been provided with the opportunity to truly show the Liverpool fans what he is capable of.

The start to this campaign has shown the creative midfielder feature in parts and with a full pre-season behind him, he is keen to feature in Roy Hodgson’s plans for 2010/11 as has been confirmed in comment by his agent Franco Zavaglia as he told CalcioNapoli24.it.

“Aquilani to Napoli? That rumour is totally unfounded,” Franco Zavaglia commented.

“Every now and then someone dreams. It’s fine to dream, but this is not an option that can be explored.”

“Aquilani is a Liverpool player, he is admired by the new manager Roy Hodgson and will remain in England. This will be his breakthrough year in the Premier League.”

“I also rule out another rumour of his potential return to Roma.” he was quick to add to prevent further speculation concerning Aquilani’s former club.

With Aquilani seemingly set on a future at Anfield, Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has also moved to dismiss recent speculation reports that  last season’s Europa League semi-finalists Wolfsburg have made an offer for Dutch international Ryan Babel.

Birmingham City are  long term admirers of the forward player and have shown interest in signing the player since the last transfer window, where an offer in the region of £8m was rejected by Liverpool. Wolfsburg have also had their name added to that list of speculation over the last couple of days but Roy Hodgson was happy to clear up the situation concerning Liverpool’s intentions for the player and any bids made for him.

“No, there’s none there,” said Hodgson of the supposed bid. “I’m afraid we’re in the realm of speculation.”

“You know better than I how many stories you’re getting every day, and many of them are unfounded and many are attempts from people to get their players in the spotlight.”

“We’ve had no written or formal offers for Ryan Babel and he’s a player who I’m expecting to play for us.”

    Gerrard Seals Burnley’s Doom

The big smile on “Captain Fantastic” Steven Gerrard’s face was a welcome return, as he grabbed two goals to slam the Premier League door shut on Burnley and send them back to the Championship for the 2010/11 season.

The first half at Turfmoor was scrappy at times as Liverpool with Aquilani trying to make the most of a rare start in the Liverpool red. Despite growing possession amidst the occassional Burnley push forward in hope of survival, the first half brought no goals for either side and a little re-think took place at half time.

With Maxi and Babel swapping flanks at the start of the second half, things started to show signs of clicking in to place a little more. It wasnt long though before Rafa Benitez had to reshuffle his pack to accomodate the loss of Dirk Kuyt with a minor calf injury 5 minutes in, Yossi Benayoun arriving off the bench.

With Liverpool lacking strike options even more so than normal, Ryan Babel took over in his favoured central role, with Torres / Ngog injured and Kuyt departing the field. Two minutes later and Liverpool were in front as Gerrard cut in from the left, got his shot away from 20 yards and saw it nestle in the bottom corner as it clipped Leon Cort on the way through leaving the keeper stranded.

7 minutes later and the game was all but over, as Gerrard added his second on 59mins with a world class finish from 25 yards. The captain took full advantage of Aquilani’s stumble, moving the ball into his path, to swing the ball inside the right hand post at pace past the full stretch Jensen in the Burnley goal, for by his own admission, his best finish of the season.

Burnley hit the post with 20mins left on the clock but they were a side resigned to the inevitable which became the certain as Maxi Rodriguez, fired in Liverpool’s 3rd of the day and his first in English football, just minutes later after a sublime throughball from the inventive Aquilani.

Liverpool were able to add a fourth in the 90th minute as Lucas, on for Daniel Agger, lifted the ball over the square Burnley defence to allow Babel to jog through and beat the keeper one on one, albeit with a small suspicion of offside. Burnley were not four goals worse than Liverpool on the day but the Reds second half display was certainly encouraging ahead of the 2nd leg tie with Atletico Madrid on Thursday at Anfield.

The talented Daniel Pacheco got some more game time as he came on to replace Steven Gerrard for the final 10 minutes and fellow young countryman Daniel Ayala played out the whole game at centre half alongside Jamie Carragher with very few causes for concern, both grateful for the rare opportunity and keen to please.

Rafa Benitez will be left with a possible few selection thoughts over the next couple of days if Ngog and Kuyt are unable to shake off their knocks in time to play, although their chances are rated as possible to be included at present. If not, then perhaps Rafa will turn to Babel to continue his improving form and lead the line. With wingers presently at a premium and Maxi once again stepping down due to being unelligible, Aquilani may find himself with a second start in a week while Lucas will be expected to return in front of the back four alongside Mascherano.

It was only their 5th away win of the season in the Premier League but Liverpool will take confidence from todays result and look forward to hopefully gaining a Europa League final place before the week is out and then preparing to do battle with Chelsea, which many a Man Utd fan will be watching cautiously. Until this time a faint half hope of a 4th place finish remains on the Red half of Merseyside.

Rampant Reds Hit Hull for 6

Fernando TorresFernando Torres smashed a hat trick as Liverpool ran riot with a 6-1 win over struggling Hull City.

Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel (2) were also on target to give Liverpool an emphatic 6-1 win at home and increase their push for the title.

The Reds now sit just three points behind Chelsea who went down 3-1 at Wigan.

With 12 minutes gone, Riera stabbed the ball into the City box, Torres’s controlled, turned Sonko with his right foot and slotted past Myhill with his left to put the Reds 1-0 ahead.

However within just three minutes the scores were level again after first Martin Skrtel, then Dirk Kuyt failed to clear a swinging Hull City cross, leaving an unmarked Geovanni to hit home from 8 yards out.

Liverpool responded well with some urgency and flowing attacks and on 28 minutes Torres put them 2-1 in front. Benayoun found the Spaniard on the edge of the six-yard box but Torres did the rest in style. Bypassing Ghilas and Myhill with clever footwork. Torres then fired past two defenders on the goalline.

Torres completed his hat trick just after the restart, Benayoun again the provider with a throughball to beat the offside trap. Torres shot through the legs of McShane and past the keeper.

Gerrard made it 4-1 on 61 minutes with a cross / shot from 25yds out that beat everyone and crashed in off the bar. Torres, Benayoun and Gerrard were shortly after removed from the action ahead of the Champions League game against Fiorentina and Babel took over the scoring.

Babel struck on 88 minutes after Kuyt went down the right and whipped in a cross to give Babel the simplest of tap ins. His second came after a stroke of luck when he inadvertently deflected Riera’s shot to see it loop over the helpless Hull keeper.

A great boost for the Reds goal difference as they look forward to taking on Chelsea in the league minus the suspended Cech after his sending off against Wigan today.
