Liverpool and Tottenham have been boosted in the race for Bologna winger Gaston Ramirez with his proposed move to Southampton on the brink of collapse. Uruguay international Gaston Ramirez was set to complete a £11.8million move to Southampton (Picture: Getty) Ramirez had announced last week that he was on the cusp of a surprise move to the Premier League new boys, who had reportedly agreed terms on a £12 million deal with Serie A club Bologna. But the Italians have since denied that a fee has been agreed, and although Ramirez has been given permission to talk to Southampton over a move, the two clubs are struggling to find a compromise on terms. Saints boss Nigel Adkins is willing to hand over up to £15 million for the 21-year-old, but Bologna feel he is worth closer to £18 million, and are aware that Liverpool and Tottenham are both hovering with significant interest. The Reds have been chasing Ramirez all summer, but have also failed to agree a fee, while Tottenham had reached an agreement last month only for the player to snub a move over wage demands. However, with his move to Southampton on the verge of collapse, both Spurs and the Reds are preparing new offers in a bid to land the highly-rated Uruguayan wideman. It is thought that Ramirez favours a move to Liverpool over the other options, but will accept any move to the Premier League in a bid to ramp up his development and boost his wage packet. Gaston Ramirez’s proposed move from Bologna to Tottenham has broken down over wage demands, according to the player’s agent. Costly: Ramirez is demanding a pretty pay-packet (Picture: PA) The highly-rated wideman has been tipped to quit the Serie A outfit after enjoying his best season to date last term, scoring eight goals and collecting a hatful of assists in 32 matches. Liverpool were thought to be leading the race, but the Reds have failed to agree terms on a deal, with Bologna refusing to sell on the cheap. However, in a silent move organised last month, Spurs agreed a £13 million deal for the player, only for it collapse at the last minute over salary demands. The news was revealed by Ramirez’s agent Oscar Betancourt, who expects Tottenham to return once the sale of Luka Modric to Real Madrid is completed. ‘The only solid offer is the one from Tottenham, who offered £12.6m,’ Betancourt explained. ‘But the deal didn’t go through because Spurs offered too low a wage to the player and if the wage difference is minimal he would stay at Bologna.’ ‘Tottenham could raise their offer if they sell Modric and in that case the deal could be done, otherwise Ramirez will stay another year at Bologna. We also talked with Liverpool but nothing more.’ A pacy left-footed winger who can play on either flank, Ramirez is one of the best talents in Europe and is also attracting interest from Inter Milan. Rated: Fulham won’t budge on £10m valuation of Clint Dempsey The Reds are currently in talks with four overseas players over moves to the club, with new manager Brendan Rodgers promising this week a new wave of ‘really exciting’ signings are on their way. Roma forward Fabio Borini and Bologna star Gaston Ramirez head Rodgers’ list of potential new recruits, but a deal for Dempsey is looking increasingly unlikely, after Liverpool baulked at Fulham’s asking price during initial talks late last week. Dempsey has already told Fulham boss Martin Jol he wants to move to Anfield this summer, but the club are sticking to their valuation of around £10 million and are refusing to budge. Liverpool value the 29-year-old at £6 million, but would be prepared to bump it up to £8 million if the Cottagers accepted a bonuses-related financial package. Fulham have said no to both offers, and have now been informed that Rodgers is perusing other options, although he may return to the negotiating table before the end of the month. Elsewhere, Liverpool are also continuing their attempts to offload players, with talks progressing with West Ham over a loan deal for Andy Carroll, while Milan are hopeful they will be able to agree a nominal fee for Alberto Aquilani as he returns to pre-season in England, still pining for a return to Serie A.
