Glen Johnson takes positive note from England’s Euro 2012 campaign

Glen Johnson has hailed the ‘fantastic’ job done by new England boss Roy Hodgson and believes the future is bright despite the disappointment of exiting Euro 2012 via a penalty shoot-out against Italy. Good job: Glen Johnson (Picture: Getty Images) ‘What impact has Hodgson made? I think he has done fantastic and in such a short space of time,’ said the Liverpool full-back. ‘Things are looking bright for the future as long as we keep going the way we are. We can go into the World Cup qualifiers feeling confident. There are more positives than negatives.’ The 27-year-old has produced his best form in an England shirt under Hodgson, and said it was down to others to judge whether he was now the undisputed first choice. He added: ‘I played all the games in the World Cup, I played the majority of the games from then to now. I’ve played all the games here, so I’d have to be in contention, wouldn’t I? ‘Every player wants to have a run in any side they play in. No one wants to come in for one game then not play for a few months and come in for another. If you’re going to play, you want to play almost every possible opportunity.’ PICTURES: England team leave Poland

Mark Bright: England lacked creativity and imagination in first Euro 2012 clash

England opening draw against France in Euro 2012 was a performance to build on, according to Metro columnist Mark Bright. Les’ is more: From left, James Milner, goalscorer Joleon Lescott, Ashley Young and Steven Gerrard celebrate after England take the lead (Picture: Reuters) I think it’s fair to say England answered a lot of questions against France in their opening Euro 2012 match on Monday but, in  doing so, they failed to ask many. The long-awaited first group game was high on work rate, effort and willingness, but England lacked creativity and imagination. A solid 4-4-2 was Roy Hodgson’s preferred formation, and in his three games in charge so far the team have scored three and conceded one. A good solid defensive foundation is the best starting point and that’s exactly what the new coach has addressed. Players like structure, they like to know what’s expected of them. Everyone in that England team looked aware of their role. As we have seen with Barcelona over recent seasons, add work rate to talent, and it equals success. Hodgson is aware and experienced at tournament football, he can tinker as England progress. But he should be a bit more adventurous going forward when the opportunity arises. However, all in all, it was a 7/10 performance, with potential to build upon. Warm welcome Before coming out to Poland and Ukraine I saw the Panorama documentary about racism among fans in the two countries. I’ve been here a week now and can honestly say I have not had anything other than the warm welcome I expected. One old lady did stop in the street as I approached her, continuing to stare as I walked past. I’m sure it was intrigue not ignorance, I might have been the first black person she’d seen. Who knows? Block and tackle A few weeks ago I celebrated three years on Twitter. I enjoy bantering with all fans, but I accept that with over 60,000 followers, among them are some idiots. After co-commentating on the opening game of the tournament, Poland v Greece, I spent hours replying to the negative and sometimes abusive comments. But I’ve now discovered the block button, where quite frankly I’m finding less is probably more. PICTURES: England 1-1 France

John Terry: Roberto Di Matteo and Didier Drogba should stay at Chelsea after FA Cup win

John Terry believes FA Cup heroes Roberto Di Matteo and Didier Drogba should remain at Chelsea next season. The Blues won the trophy at Wembley yesterday, defeating Liverpool 2-1 thanks to a second half strike from Drogba, and the result has convinced skipper Terry that the duo must stay at Stamford Bridge. Roberto Di Matteo appears to have the backing of Chelsea’s players (Getty) Di Matteo is acting as the club’s manager on an interim basis following the March sacking of Andre Villas-Boas, and there has been much speculation that this season will be striker Drogba’s last in west London. But Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich should now move to tie down both on longer-term deals, Terry believes.Commenting on Drogba’s future, the defender is quoted by NDTV as saying: ‘I hope he will stay. It would be such a shame if he went. He has been incredible for this football club.’And Terry was of a similar mindset when it came to questions over Di Matteo’s role, stating: ‘It is a decision the board will make and hopefully with this win we can go on and achieve great things … and make it a very easy decision.’Chelsea will have the opportunity to add to the FA Cup win when they travel to Germany in a fortnight for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich, a match that will be played in their opposition’s own Allianz Arena. Papiss Cisse stunners sink Chelsea as Newcastle eye Champions League

Papiss Cisse scored a wonderful double as Newcastle bounced back from their drubbing at Wigan to claim an impressive win against Chelsea. Leaps and bounds: Papiss Cisse enjoys the first of his two cracking goals (Picture: PA) With one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup final against Liverpool, Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo made six changes to the side which thrashed QPR on Sunday, resting star men like Juan Mata and Frank Lampard. The hosts started brightly, though, with Raul Meireles blasting an early effort over the crossbar. But it was Newcastle who went in front after 19 minutes, with Cisse fed by Davide Santon, and the Senegal striker taking a touch before firing brilliantly beyond Petr Cech. Cisse (left) has been one of the buys of the season (Picture: Action Images) A minute before half-time, Hatem Ben Arfa’s low cross ran through to Demba Ba, who struck a fine effort against the Chelsea crossbar. After the break, the Blues failed to find a way back into the game, despite enjoying plenty of possession.Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote was carried off on a stretcher, after he seemed to be caught by an elbow from John Obi Mikel.Despite that blow, the points were sealed for the visitors in stoppage time when Cisse struck a contender for goal of the season, a fantastic swerving shot from distance that dipped over Cech and under the bar. Fernando Torres: I’ve had a difficult year at Chelsea but I can enjoy it now

Fernando Torres has insisted he always retained belief in his ability during his year from hell after scoring his first Chelsea hat-trick. Fernando Torres admitted the past year had been difficult (Picture: AP) The Spain striker produced his best performance since a £50million move from Liverpool in January 2011 during the rout of West London rivals QPR at Stamford Bridge. The treble came five days after Torres scored in Chelsea’s sensational Champions League fightback at Barcelona and he said: ‘From my first day in English football, everything was really good and looking easy. ‘I was scoring almost every day and things were very good. I have had one very difficult year here, going through a very difficult period of time, where things were not right. When you work hard the rewards have to come, and it’s time to enjoy now.’ Fernando Torres scored his first hat-trick for Chelsea against QPR (Picture: Getty) Torres has scored seven goals since Roberto di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas as manager eight weeks ago. He managed just five for the club before that. Asked what had changed, he said: ‘We understood that we needed to play as a team. I think that’s what we are showing now.’ John Terry shrugged off crowd abuse over his upcoming trial for allegedly racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand to score the second, with Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda also on target. Djibril Cisse got a consolation for the visitors. PICTURES: See more pictures of Chelsea v QPR

Papiss Cisse’s curried goat fuelled brace against Liverpool – Alan Pardew

Massimo Marioni Papiss Cisse’s curried goat fuelled brace against Liverpool – Alan Pardew Alan Pardew felt curried goat may have been the secret to helping Papiss Cisse down Liverpool, while he backed former Magpie Andy Carroll to end his poor run of form. Two-goal hero: Papiss Cisse celebrates his second (Picture: PA) The Newcastle boss, who saw his side go level on points with Chelsea following their 2-0 win over the struggling Reds, said: ‘Cisse was terrific, and long may that continue. ‘We had Africa Day at the training ground on Friday. He had some curried goat and maybe that’s why he was fuelled up.’ The Senegal international inherited the famous Newcastle no.9 shirt from Carroll when he joined in January, and Pardew offered some words of sympathy for the Geordie striker, who’s still struggling to find his feet at Anfield. ‘I felt for Andy today, I did,’ said the Toon boss. ‘He’s a terrific lad and he’s having a tough year. But he will come back.’ Carroll was booked for diving and substituted ten minutes from time on his return to St James’ Park, which saw him storm down the tunnel swearing at his manager Kenny Dalglish. However, the Scot defended his forward, saying: ‘He was frustrated with the way the game had gone. Nor just for himself but for the team. That frustration takes him up into the dressing room. ‘We have not got a problem with people showing desperation or disappointment or frustration. But we need to channel it better than we have done.’ PICTURES: Newcastle 2-0 Liverpool
