METRO – Robin van Persie’s ‘elbow’ was not violent, rules Howard Webb

Manchester United’s Robin van Persie will escape any retrospective punishment from the Football Association for his apparent elbow on Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye. No doing: Howard Webb intervenes between Cabaye and Van Persie (Picture: AFP/GettyImages) No match official spotted the Dutchman’s off the ball clash with the Toon midielder, where Van Persie flung an arm across Cabaye’s face while both were running towards goal. But after viewing video evidence, referee Howard Webb deemed the incident to be unworthy of a violent conduct charge, meaning no retrospective action can be taken by the FA. Late: Tiote’s dangerous tackle on Cleverly (Picture: Sky Sports) Stoke’s Robert Huth and Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote will also avoid any punishment after finding themselves under the spotlight for perceived stamps during their respective games against Liverpool and United. Huth laid a foot on Luis Suarez’s chest during the Potters 0-0 draw at Anfield, while Tiote was late into a studs-up challenge on United’s Tom Cleverley. However, seeing as one of more match official saw both incidents, and considered it unnecessary to take action, the FA cannot overrule their decision. Who is the luckiest to escape FA action?

METRO – Ibrahim Afellay snubs Tottenham loan move to sign for Schalke 04

Ibrahim Afellay has decided against joining Tottenham on loan and has instead opted to sign for Champions League bound Schalke 04.  London calling: Ibrahim Afellay could be a direct replacement for fellow Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart at Spurs (Picture: EPA) Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and coach Andre Villas-Boas had reportedly spoken to the 26-year-old last week and convinced him to join Spurs. But Afellay has decided not to play at White Hart Lane next season and was persuaded by the opportunity of playing regular Champions League football with the German side. The Dutchman will link up with fellow countryman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and the striker is delighted to welcome the former PSV Eindhovan player. ‘I want to welcome Ibrahim Afellay to #S04,’ tweeted Huntelaar. ‘Tomorrow training at 16:00 – Don’t forget – Wilkommen Ibrahim Afellay.’ Afellay, who had also interested Arsenal and Liverpool, had been told by new Barca coach Tito Vilanova he was unlikely to get much first-team football in the new season.
