METRO – Liverpool and Everton plan tributes for Hillsborough at weekend’s games

Liverpool and Everton are set to mark this week’s findings regarding the Hillsborough disaster during the clubs’ fixtures this weekend. Liverpool and Sunderland are likely to mark this week’s findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel in tomorrow’s match (Picture: AFP) Liverpool have confirmed players will wear something to commemorate the report released this week by the Hillsborough Independent Panel and its significance during their away tie against Sunderland this evening, a club spokesperson confirmed. The two clubs meet at the Stadium of Light in what will be Liverpool’s first match since the public release of the report and flags at the stadium will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for the 96 victims.Black Cats boss Martin O’ Neill believes it will be an emotional occasion in the north-east this evening.‘It’s vindication for everyone at Liverpool. It is fantastic news for them but the sadness is still there,’ said the former Aston Villa manager.‘It will be a really highly charged atmosphere tomorrow.‘Those people would rather have their families around them than burying them. They pursued this for a long time and obviously they have been proved right. I would have kept fighting on if it was me. If the reports coming through blamed them for their own deaths, that was crazy. You would have fought on until the very end.‘That particular day did change the game. Even after 20-odd years it’s great news for them.’Liverpool’s city rivals Everton also plan to mark the report’s findings when they face Newcastle at Goodison Park on Monday night. The Toffees have always shown solidarity with Liverpool and the families of the 96 since the disaster happened 23 years ago and will continue to do so this weekend when they will have a post-match presentation on the big screen to pay tribute to the victims, while children in Liverpool and Everton shirts will be led onto the pitch.Everton boss David Moyes said: ‘I wasn’t here when the disaster happened – I was a player at the time. ‘I’m sure then that everyone in the city stood together as one and now we stand shoulder to shoulder with the families of the bereaved who have had to put up with this and congratulate them for persevering and getting the outcome they all believed in.’

Joey Barton takes ‘Twitter sabbatical’ after being dropped by QPR

METRO WEB REPORTER Joey Barton takes ‘Twitter sabbatical’ after being dropped by QPRJoey Barton is to take a ‘Twitter sabbatical’ after being left out of QPR’s team for Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Sunderland. The Hoops captain was substituted during the midweek win over Liverpool and later admitted his performance had not been good enough. Joey Barton watched QPR’s defeat from the bench (Getty Images) It was rumoured Mark Hughes would leave him out of the side at the Stadium of Light and the midfielder used the social network to hint that was the case, before the team was officially announced. After the loss, Barton tweeted he was ‘very, very disappointed’, but did not specify whether that was because of the result or the fact he was not introduced from the bench.’Not selected. Nothing I can do sitting on the bench. Obviously disappointed,’ he said. His customary rant did not follow and Barton instead surprised his 1.3million followers by revealing he would keep his opinions to himself in the coming weeks.’Going to take a little twitter sabbatical before I say something I’ll end up regretting. Have a good few weeks people,’ the midfielder tweeted. The defeat, which saw QPR drop back into the bottom three, came courtesy of goals from Nicklas Bendtner, James McClean and Stephane Sessegnon.Rangers, who pulled a goal back through Taye Taiwo late on, also had Djibril Cisse sent off for a poor tackle on Fraizer Campbell and he now faces a four-game ban.
