GUARDIAN – Newcastle United v Liverpool: squad sheets

As Brendan Rodgers tries to fathom out how to cope without the suspended Luis Suárez, his good friend Alan Pardew endeavours to avert a crisis at Newcastle United. While a win would leave his side all but safe from relegation, anything less could see the Tyneside crowd turn on a manager who has not been forgiven for losing 3-0 at home to Sunderland a fortnight ago. “We’re all a bit nervous,” said Pardew. “This club needs a win, and after what happened against Sunderland we’re going to have to produce a performance worthy of the black and white shirt”. METRO – Alan Pardew worried about Demba Ba exit amid Arsenal and Liverpool talk

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admits the club face a fight to fend off the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool for hot-shot Demba Ba when the transfer window re-opens. In demand: Newcastle striker Demba Ba is wanted by a host of other clubs (Picture: EMPICS) The Senegal striker was on target twice last night as Newcastle swept aside Wigan 3-0 at St James’ Park, but with morning reports claiming Arsenal are ready to trigger Ba’s £7.5million release clause, Pardew acknowledges the odds are against his side hanging on to their star player. ‘Demba’s been outstanding for us. But this city is one where information gets out,’ Pardew said. ‘We’ve had to board our training ground up because our team’s been leaked, and details of Demba’s contract have been leaked and that’s not acceptable.’ ‘He’s still got a clause in his contract. We’ve tried to negotiate it away but haven’t managed to yet.’ ‘But he’s never done anything other than look me in the eye and show me he wants to stay. He loves it here and understands it’s a football city.’ ‘We’re trying to do a deal to take the clause out because it makes it difficult for me, for Demba and the club.’ Liverpool are also thought to be keeping a close eye on the striker’s situation, and may consider challenging Arsenal’s for Ba’s signature.

METRO – Demba Ba’s Newcastle contract talks stall as rumours over a move escalate

Newcastle striker Demba Ba is moving closer to an exit from St James’ Park in January as talks over a new contract have stalled. Demba Ba could be set for a move from St James’ Park unless a new deal is agreed (Picture: Reuters/Action Images) The Senegal international has a £7.5million release clause in his current deal which could be activated by a club when the transfer window reopens in the new year, but Newcastle bosses are attempting to negotiate a new contract with Ba which would see the clause removed. But the former West Ham striker has yet to agree to the terms tabled, with his wage demands far exceeding what the Magpies are willing to offer and Liverpool are thought to be keeping a close eye on the situation. The delay means Newcastle boss Alan Pardew could face an anxious wait throughout January to see if the Reds trigger Ba’s release clause, having already admitted he will need to strengthen his squad during the transfer window. Ba has netted eight times this season, following his superb form last year which saw him hit the back of the net 16 times in the Premier League alone, although Newcastle are still languishing in 14th place.
