METRO – Gallery: Liverpool bid farewell to Jamie Carragher

Liverpool bid an emotional farewell to Jamie Carragher after the defender played his last match for the club at Anfield against QPR before retirement. The 35-year-old will hang up his boots after 737 appearances for the Reds, and leaves manager Brendan Rodgers with the mammoth task of replacing his years of experience at the back. ‘He’s been […]

TAO – Liverpool 1-0 Queens Park Rangers: Jamie Carragher bows out with win

Jamie Carragher’s final game in a Liverpool shirt ended in victory on Sunday as the Reds walked away one goal winners against Queens Park Rangers. It was Philippe Coutinho, the Reds standout performer of 2013, who scored the only goal of the game, firing a drilled shot from distance midway through the first-half of a game which the hosts dominated. Coutinho will feel aggrieved that he hadn’t had a goal earlier in the game, with the referee deciding, incorrectly that a close range effort from the Brazilian hadn’t crossed the line. The narrow margin was complimentary to the visitors, with Liverpool having 27 shots in total, 20 of which were on target, with Robert Green putting in a solid display for the Hoops. Carragher nearly got in on the act himself in the early stages of the second-period, firing a thunderbolt of a shot from distance off the post. The defender was lighthearted about his near miss at the end of the fixture, stating: “I scored on my debut and it would have been nice if my shot [which hit the post] had gone in.” “I’m just getting the hang of shooting in my final game. It’s a bit late!!”

TAO – LFC Scout Report: Queens Park Rangers

By Ben Hardy Jamie Carragher will say farewell when Liverpool take on Queens Park Rangers at Anfield as the Premier League wraps up for another season on Sunday evening. Carragher will captain the team and a guard of honour is expected to welcome the veteran defender onto the pitch as his 16 year tenure with Liverpool comes to an end. During his time on Merseyside, Carragher won such as honours the FA Cup (2), The League Cup (3), FA Community Shield (2), UEFA Cup (1), UEFA Super Cup (2) and the Champions League in 2005. He also amassed over 500 appearences for the Reds and 38 England caps, firmly placing his name into Liverpool history. Facing Carragher and co. is QPR who have had little to shout about all season. They will finish bottom of the league if they fail to win on Sunday, having only achieved four wins so far in a season to forget. Currently on a run of no wins from their last eight matches, QPR’s strategy of buying high profile, experienced players has failed and Harry Redknapp will no doubt have to reduce the wage bill in the summer as they prepare for life in the Championship. The reverse fixture saw Liverpool comfortably win at Loftus Road after three first half goals gave them maximum points in December. Since then, Liverpool have added quality players such as Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge and despite a seventh place finish this season, Brenden Rogers and the Liverpool supporters can be quietly optimistic about next season. Now unbeaten in seven matches, Liverpool have finished the season well with Daniel Sturridge stepping up to fill the void left by Luis Suarez as he serves his ban, which all bodes well for next season. Team News: QPR are expected to be without Loic Remy after his arrest this week following allegation of rape and goalkeeper Julio Cesar could miss out once again leaving Rob Green to come in. Adel Taarabt, Shaun Wright-Phillips and DJ Campbell all remain out for Rangers. Liverpool are without Captain Steven Gerrard as he undergoes a shoulder operation whilst Luis Suarez will serve the fourth of his ten match ban. Martin Kelly, Joe Allen and Raheem Sterling all remain unavailable. The Anfield Opinion will keep you up to date with all the latest post match action as well all the transfer news and gossip in the summer.
