METRO – Brendan Rodgers hails ‘terrific’ Jonjo Shelvey as Liverpool see off West Ham

Jonjo Shelvey played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over West Ham (Picture: PA) Brendan Rodgers hailed Jonjo Shelvey’s performance as a makeshift centre forward in Liverpool’s win over West Ham at Upton Park. The Reds were without a recognised striker due to Luis Suarez’s one-match ban but the impressive Shelvey even claimed Liverpool’s winner – although that will go down as a James Collins own goal as the ball looped off his foot and over keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. Rodgers said: ‘There was pressure on Jonjo because people have compared him to Suarez but he has been terrific in my time here. He has a big future. ‘There are two different ways in which you can play the No.9 role and Carlton Cole, who I know from my time at Chelsea, was outstanding. ‘But young Jonjo, at 20 years of age, played the No.9 role a different way, combining with the midfielders to make the fourth man, being a threat when he is in around the box and showing great feet.’ West Ham old boys Glen Johnson and Joe Cole got Liverpool’s earlier goals, either side of Mark Noble’s penalty and Steven Gerrard’s own goal. To add to the Hammers’ misery, midfielder Mohamed Diame faces 12 weeks after going off with a hamstring injury. Boss Sam Allardyce said: ‘It is disappointing to lose, but it is even more disappointing when your most creative player goes off with a serious injury.’ Soccer – Barclays Premier League – West Ham United v Liverpool – Upton Park Soccer – Barclays Premier League – West Ham United v Liverpool – Upton Park West Ham United v Liverpool – Premier League West Ham United v Liverpool – Premier League West Ham United v Liverpool – Premier League West Ham United v Liverpool – Premier League West Ham United v Liverpool – Premier League Soccer – Barclays Premier League – West Ham United v Liverpool – Upton Park
